Emergency Shut Offs
In a commercial building there can be a multitude of different reasons why you’d need to shut off the gas, water, or electricity during an emergency scenario. Often, building owners will rely on the fire department or utility company to come in and shut off these services which can cost a lot of time in an emergency. For example, if your sprinkler system is malfunctioning, the time it takes for the fire department to show up and turn the water off can be the difference in hundreds of gallons of water saturating your property’s structure and belongings.
If your building has utilities running to it, it will also have these main emergency shutoff valves and switches. It’s important to know where they are and to make sure that anyone who is part of the emergency responses in your building also knows where they are.
SERVPRO of Chesapeake South offers a free service to businesses called the Emergency Ready Program (ERP) to help with this. We will send out a representative to come out and walk your property with you to take pictures, and document where all of these shut offs are as well as other pertinent information required in an emergency scenario. Once our walkthrough is complete, we’ll compile an ERP binder for you that includes all of this information including contact information for all of your emergency services. We can walk through this binder with you and explain everything to make sure you fully understand it. That way you’ll be able to go to your staff and be comfortable knowing that everyone is knowledgeable in the proper responses to any given emergency scenario at your place of business.
Emergencies are not always avoidable, but a prompt and effective response can be key in reducing the amount of time and costs involved in getting your business back to operations as usual after the fact. If you’d like to speak with one of our representatives about an ERP for your business please do not hesitate to reach out!
Home Deodorization Step by Step Guide
Deodorizing your home after a fire, dealing with mold or other events that cause unpleasant smells is a multistep process. Here we’ll go into the different steps required in fully removing odors from your home or business so that you can better understand everything that goes into your property’s deodorization.
The first step in getting rid of odors is removing the source. Debris or other items covered in odor causing residues will continue to release them into the air until they are removed or taken care of, so removing the source is first in a permanent odor solution.
Once the odor causing items are removed, we’ll thoroughly clean the surfaces of the affected area. Without a proper and thorough cleaning particles and residues can be left behind to continue to generate odors.
The third step in deodorization is to “recreate” the conditions that caused the odor penetration. This means that depending on how the original odor was dispersed about the property we will use various techniques to recreate that with a deodorization agent. For example, if the smell is caused by smoke damage, then we will use a fogger to “recreate” smoke to distribute it. We do this because the best way to efficiently reach everywhere that the odor has penetrated is by doing the same thing with the odor removing agents, allowing them to effectively target the sources of the odors.
In some cases, the odor issues may be severe enough to require sealing. This can be used in cases where the odor removal may be too expensive or otherwise impractical. We’ll use a sealant on the surfaces of the affected materials to help lock in these particles and prevent them from being released into the air further.
While some odors may go away on their own, depending on the scenario odor generating particles can penetrate deep into the structure of your property. Handling these odors and effectively removing them requires a professional company trained in the science of deodorization. If your home or business is suffering from an unpleasant smell that just won’t go away give SERVPRO of Chesapeake South a call and let our highly trained technicians take care of it. We’re here to help 24/7, 365 days a year!

Admin Day at SERVPRO
After over a year of uncertainty and distance, Team Bahen was thrilled to welcome all their fabulous office staff back to the office full time.
With everyone still working from home on Administrative Professionals Day, Management put their heads together on how they could show their appreciation to each team member for when they came back. They organized a personal lunch with all the office staff, sharing tables with new employees who they may have not met yet due to COVID, as well as personalized bags and beautiful flower arrangements gifted to each team member! This was a great way for our team to come together and learn about their new team members as well as catch up with those they have not seen in person in a while!
Thank you to all of our Administrative Professionals within Team Bahen, we couldn’t ask for a better group of women to keep this office running!

Choose SERVPRO of Chesapeake South To Remove Water From Your Home
When water invades your Chesapeake home, quick action needs to be taken in order to get matters under control and your life back to normal. The longer that water is left to soak into your home's floors, the greater the water damage and the repair.
SERVPRO of Chesapeake South handles water damage with an inventory of equipment with large and powerful pumps that we can submerge enabling a quicker extraction of the floodwater. Our machinery will raise the interior temperature so that evaporation happens at a precise rate.
Our trained technicians and supervisors determine the best drying method to utilize to maintain the quality of the water damaged area and product. For instance if a wooden floor is dried out too quickly or with extreme temperatures, the floor can be ruined. Our motto is to restore, not replace. This is beneficial to not only the homeowner but to your insurance company too as it helps to save money.
After the extractor has removed the water, smaller hand-held equipment is used to remove the remaining water found in crevices and baseboards. Once the water has been removed, the drying process begins for the remaining surface dampness and porous household items with the use of our desiccant machines and air movers. An Air Scrubber, our portable filtration system can be used to help clean the air of any contaminants such as dust, gasses, or chemicals in any area.
When your Chesapeake home floods, call us your local SERVPRO at 757-523-9700.

Flood Insurance Spotlight
Of course, no one plans to become a hurricane victim, and no one should have to learn the hard way either that homeowner’s or renter’s insurance does not cover flood damage.
Chesapeake’s Deputy coordinator of Emergency Management, Robb Braidwood said after Hurricane Matthew, the first category 5 Atlantic hurricane since 2007, “If you live in Chesapeake, you should have flood insurance.” “The highest point in the city is in a swamp.”
Recent reform plans to the National Flood Insurance Program were announced on March 18, 2019 by the Trump administration.
The program would begin to assess properties individually using variables like one’s proximity to large bodies of water, hurricane rainfall, coastal surges rather than the current applying a single formula for an entire flood zone. Since higher valued properties are more likely to hit the $250,000 insurance cap, lower valued homes are paying proportionately more than higher valued homes. The new reform would drive flood risk into the private reinsurance and risk markets. According to the Insurance Information Institute, FEMA will announce the new rates on April 1, 2020 and will implement the new system on October 1, 2020.
Flood insurance can pay claims when there is no Presidentially declared disaster. The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) offers disaster grants that do not have to be paid back, but this amount is often much less than what is needed to recover.
If you have flood damage, and do not have flood insurance, there could be resources available to help you through FEMA. For info go to www.fema.gov.
If you suffer flood damage in Chesapeake, call your local SERVPRO® of Chesapeake South at 757-523-9700.
